While many different industries have evolved over time, it seems the one institution that has failed to keep up is education. Technology has helped advance many fields, including health, automotive, and even fashion. Yet, for some reason education is still light years behind in technologically advancing the teaching method. That is all set to change with the incorporation of virtual reality technology.
Gone are the days where the only acceptable method of learning came in the form of staring at a book or listening to a boring lecture. As the population of students becomes more and more technologically proficient, schools have started adopting more e-friendly learning solutions; one of which being virtual reality. Of course seeing a pair of Google Cardboard with a logo or school mascot will increase school spirit, but it goes well beyond that. Below are three effective reasons for incorporating virtual reality into your school.
Education through Engagement
Some children can learn simply through reading while others are more visual. One proven method that has shown wide acceptance across the board is education through engagement. Virtual reality gives children the hands-on abilities to learn topics that might have otherwise been harder to explain or grasp. Additionally, it allows for teachers to introduce concepts to the classroom without having to leave the room. This is not to replace field trips, but to work in conjunction with. Let’s say you are teaching students about geometry and construction. You certainly cannot take them to a construction site in real life. You can; however, take them to one through virtual reality. Here, students can see first-hand what happens on a site and real world application of their lessons.
You don’t need to be a scientist or have a PhD to know that children love playing games, especially video games. However, with children being attached to their electronics now more than ever, it can be hard to engage them in regular educational games. Introducing virtual reality into the classroom can make a substantial difference in motivating children to learn. You are essentially meeting them at their level, while also elevating them to a new one.
Fostering Creative Environments
One of the best benefits of VR technology is its ability to foster creative environments without the added pressure from outside influences. Virtual reality helps break down the boundaries of traditional education and generates scenarios that are more creative and fluid. You can accomplish more in VR than in real life. Giving children this level of technology and to put a portion of their educational experience in their hands is empowering to them. Furthermore, it helps prevent in-class bullying. In virtual reality, the playing field is even, regardless of gender, race, weight, learning ability, etc. It helps to foster a more inclusive and comfortable environment for children to learn.
Virtual reality is an excellent platform for schools to introduce into their educational goals. It opens students up to a world outside of their own, from the comfort of their own. As technology continues to evolve, education needs to start working in tandem to keep up.
